So, before I give you a sure fire way of avoiding the scam, that is giving a wide birth to all those product offering that are big on hype but lightweights when it comes to energy savings, firstly lets consider; why all the new excitement about this industry this year? The truth is I have been in the Energy Saving Business since 1982 and I have never seen anything like the current level of interest in Energy Efficiency from so many sectors.

I believe this is as a result of three factors that conspire together on the global scene that are taking us ever closer to ‘tipping point” namely:-

Climate Change is Here for Real – For a long time people have been asking questions about the impact we could be having on our environment through the production of excessive greenhouse gasses. There have been plenty of skeptics however, this is no longer a matter of debate, a significant number of scientists, climatologists, politicians and influential world leaders recognize that ‘doing nothing’ is no longer a valid stance. The world’s population and the demand for energy are increasing daily. Customers are voting with their feet (and pockets) and looking with increased disdain on the wanton corporate abusers.

Diminishing Fossil Fuels are a Finite Resource – Most of our electrical energy is generated by way of fossil fuels which are finite resources… the end of oil as a plentiful commodity is now within sight and since there is as yet no viable alternative… Energy Efficiency buys us valuable time. It is now seen by many as the most readily available “source of energy” and a simple way to ensure we can continue to meet present demand, at least for the time being. If we expect that as fossil fuel supplies like oil, coal and gas diminish that somehow prices will remain stable – think again. Nothing affects the price point more than supply and demand. Currently we are producing barely enough to meet global demand. Prices will likely continue to skyrocket.

We are in a Massive Global Financial Crisis – Given the energy costs are continuing to rise to unprecedented levels and all indications are the worst is yet to come… saving energy is one of the most cost effective ways of saving a company money. There are only two ways to make a company more profitable; increase sales or reduce costs. In the current economic climate companies of every size must control costs and be aggressive in their conservation of energy just to stay alive.
But don’t just take my word for it… this is what others are saying:-

Global Trends have just released their “10 Key Trends to Watch in 2012”. At number 4 – Energy Security. Their conclusion? “The supply-demand imbalances we face are driving us to do more with less.” In other words… Energy Efficiency is going to be BIG in the short to medium term.

Of course, as Global Trends is at pains to point out, watching a trend will not change your life in any way whatsoever. You only benefit when you take action. And rest assured, if you don’t, someone else will.

So if you’re someone who likes to reminisce on what might have been (“I remember when computers/cell phones/the internet was a novelty”) then the energy revolution will probably prove to be just another ‘if only’.
